A little bit about

Maiden Lane Market

Here, I hope to explain a little bit of the process of my doll making in a few short paragraphs.

Creating an English wooden doll involves several steps, each contributing to the final product's charm and authenticity. The creation of the main body begins with a specially selected block of wood, which is mounted on the lathe. This initial stage focuses on shaping the head, neck, and torso as a single piece. After creating the main body, the arms and legs are also rounded on the lathe, achieving a uniform and smooth form. I then use carving knives to create the details of the fingers, thumb, and shoes, each aspect of the figure is brought to life.

The next stage of the process involves painting the figure. I apply several coats of a creamy color, allowing each layer to dry and cure for 24 hours before moving on to the next. Between coats, I sand the surface to ensure a smooth finish. Next, I sew tiny cloth arms and attach them securely to the body. The final step is hand-painting the face and shoes. With careful attention to detail, I strive to replicate the dotted eyebrows and eyelashes reminiscent of the 18th century, bringing the character to life. Each step is purposeful, striving to blend craftsmanship with historical accuracy.

In the final steps, I embrace the historical tradition of using flax for her hair. Once the hair is complete, I turn my attention to sewing a gown. Each aspect of the process offers its own unique pleasures and challenges. The combination of mechanical precision and artistic touch transforms this block of wood into a truly unique doll!
